The legal dispute between X* and Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) about X*’s unauthorised use of user data to train the Grok model has come to an end. This happened after X agreed to follow up on promises made to the Irish High Court forever.
The company agreed to stop processing certain personal data obtained within the EU for the purpose of artificial intelligence (AI) training permanently.
According to the legal complaint, which was submitted on behalf of Euroconsumers and Altroconsumo by attorney Marco Scialdone, X has repeatedly violated the EU’s historic data protection regulation.
How Was Grok being fed data ?
The robots can access whatever you have ever written on the website if you are not employing artificial intelligence. Despite being a premium X feature, Grok can access your account without requiring a paid account. Even if you are not using Grok, you can still train the tools with your posts thanks to the new hidden setting.
Stop This Feature
On X, navigate to the settings page .Proceed to “Privacy and safety” after that. Check the box labelled “Allow your postings as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning” after selecting “Grok.” And that is it!
In late July, users of X discovered that data sharing for the purpose of training Grok, a generative AI chatbot, was activated automatically.
The company “may use the information we collect and publicly available information to help train AI models for the purposes stated in this policy,” according to X’s most recent privacy policy, which was published in September 2023.
The authority informed that “the personal data covered by the undertaking has now been destroyed,” although it did not elaborate on the details of the long-term arrangement.
DPC
The DPC declared that it would approach the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) for a request for an opinion regarding the legality and foundation of AI data processing.
DPC Commissioner Dale Sunderland stated, “The DPC expects that the resulting opinion will enable proactive, efficient, and consistent regulation throughout Europe.”
The commission claims that from May 7 to August 1, X trained Grok using user data from Europe. On August 8, the company committed to permanently complying with the commission’s demands and stopped using the data. Subsequently, the DPC said that its legal actions were concluded.
