A massive criminal network that hundreds of scammers used to scam people worldwide has been taken down in a significant operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Since its founding in 2021, the sophisticated fraud network known as Russian Coms is thought to have enabled losses of tens of millions of pounds.

Three people have been taken into custody by the NCA in relation to the platform. It is thought that two of the accused were key in the inception and growth of the service. Pending additional research, all three have been released on conditional bail.

In the upcoming months, there will likely be an explosion of actions against users in the UK and abroad as a result of the NCA’s operation, which will be supported by Europol and foreign law enforcement partners.

Russian Coms began operations in 2021 and provided its services via a physical phone before growing to include a web application.

The platform was heavily promoted on well-known social media networks like Telegram, Instagram, and Snapchat. Among the features that were advertised were “unlimited minutes,” “encrypted phone calls,” and “rapid handset wipe.”

It is believed that 170,000 individuals in the UK have been the victims of frauds carried out via this platform.By faking their caller ID, scammers were able to cover up their identities thanks to the technology.

This made it possible for them to appear to be calling from reputable establishments like banks, telecom providers, and even law enforcement. By doing this, thieves might quickly win over the trust of gullible victims before stealing their funds and private data.

Russian Coms users made almost 1.3 million calls to half a million distinct UK phone lines between 2021 and 2024, according to information found by NCA investigators.

One such scam involves claiming to be a bank phone number in order to win over the victim’s trust and then convincing them that their account had been compromised. After that, they would be talked into moving their funds to a different account so that their savings would be protected.

Today, the NCA can reveal that they have shut down a platform used by hundreds of criminals to defraud victims across the world.
