Nodex, a major Russian internet provider, revealed on Tuesday that a cyberattack had seriously damaged its network. The business believes that the attack came from Ukraine and has called it “planned.”
What Was The Impact Of This Attack ?
The event was disclosed by St. Petersburg-based Nodex in a statement posted on the Russian social media site VKontakte. As stated by the business Overnight, the attack “destroyed” its infrastructure. Although no timeframe for a complete recovery has been given, efforts are under progress to restore systems from backups.
The restoration of phone and call centre services is the company’s top priority right now. Nodex announced on Wednesday that it was making headway in restoring its DHCP server, which is necessary for IP assignment and internet connectivity. In order to restore access, customers were instructed to restart their routers.
Why A Planned Attack ?
The attack has been linked to the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance, a group of hackers that has been active since 2016. They posted screenshots of infected systems, such as Hewlett Packard Enterprise virtual infrastructure, VMware from Nodex, and Veeam backup, on their Telegram channel.
Nodex’s computers, according to the group, were “totally robbed and deleted.” The systems of Nodex were “completely attacked and erased.” Before the infrastructure was “empty” and without backups, data was stolen.The hackers pointed out that Nodex had no functional equipment after the attack, which made recovery much more difficult.
The internet monitoring firm NetBlocks documented a complete failure of Nodex’s connectivity at midnight on Tuesday, capturing the scope of the attack. Customers were angry and expressed complaints on Nodex’s official social media page as a result of the disruption to both fixed-line and mobile services.
The fact that the company’s website is still offline highlights how serious the situation is. The network core has been restored, and experts are working on resetting switches, according to Nodex’s ongoing updates on its restoration efforts. Although many consumers can now access the internet again, full service recovery has not yet been achieved.
